Karrin Taylor Robson: AG opinion concludes Arizona has legal authority to defend its southern border

Feb. 8, 2022

The Self-Defense Clause of the U.S. Constitution guarantees Arizona and other states “the sovereign right to use force to defend themselves against the activities of transnational cartels and gangs operating in the state’s territory at its border,” according to an opinion issued this week by the Arizona Attorney General’s Office.

“The lawlessness and violence at our southern border is a national emergency caused by the abject failure of the Biden-Harris administration,” said Karrin Taylor Robson, Republican candidate for Arizona Governor. “The Attorney General’s opinion makes clear that Arizona has constitutional authority to defend its citizens against this cartel-led invasion, and that’s exactly what our state will do when I’m Governor. I’m the only candidate with a SECURE Arizona plan that will surge additional boots to the border via the National Guard and Arizona State Guard; ensure state and local law enforcement have every resource they require to combat the cartels; collaborate with like-minded states to share intel and deliver more resources to our border; and finish the wall.

“Bringing the chaos at our border under control is my highest priority and will be my first action as Governor, as I’ll immediately call an Emergency Session of the Arizona Legislature. We cannot afford to wait any longer for the federal government to act. As Governor, I won’t.”

The SECURE Arizona plan includes six steps, beginning with Taylor Robson calling the Arizona Legislature into an emergency session immediately after taking the oath of office in January 2023.

Surge National Guard
Emergency Session
Construct the Wall
Utilize surveillance technology
Revoke funding from sanctuary cities
Enter multi-state compact
